Accent Coaching for Actors: Audition Prep

When a casting director sends over audition sides to prepare for a reading, there is usually not much time to work with. If English is not your first language, or you are aiming for a specific target accent for the role, you want those sides to come across as well as they can.
A casting director is ultimately deciding whether you are right for the part. Accent is something that can keep being refined after you are cast, before filming or opening day. However, the clearer your pronunciation is at the reading, the easier it is for them to hear your acting rather than getting caught up in your accent. That is what this coaching is for: making sure the specific words in your audition sides come across the way the role calls for, so nothing gets in the way of them seeing you in the role.
You do not need months of general accent training to get there. What you need is narrower and faster.
How the Coaching Works
The sessions are built around your audition sides, and how many you need depends on the material.
First session, go through the sides together. We work through your sides line by line. Anywhere a word's pronunciation or stress might read as off for the target accent, I teach it: which syllable gets the emphasis, how the word actually sounds. The focus is ‘say what I say, how I say it.’ It is not drilling or homework packets, just direct, practical modeling of the specific words in your sides.
Second session, review and refine. After you had time to practice, we go back through the sides, catch anything that is slipping, and sharpen it before your reading.
Sessions are focused entirely on your material, for as long as you need.
What I Do, and What I Do Not
To be clear about what this coaching actually covers: I work on word and syllable stress and pronunciation, helping you say each word the way the target accent calls for.
I do not work on intonation, and I do not interpret your lines for you. Where you put the meaning in a sentence, the acting choices themselves, that is your job, and your director's. My job is narrower and more specific: making sure the words themselves sound right. I am not here to change your performance. I am here to make sure your accent is not the thing standing between you and the role.
After You Book the Part
If you book the role, I can keep working with you on the full script, not just the sides you auditioned with. Same approach: say what I say, how I say it, applied line by line to everything you will say on camera or on stage.
Who This Is For
This works for any actor who needs to sound right for a role, whether English is your second language, you are aiming for a specific American regional accent, or you are working to reduce a strong accent for a General American reading. If you have audition sides in hand and a reading on the calendar, this is built for exactly that situation.
